Black And Proud Vol 2 - The Soul Of The Black Panther Era 2005

The second volume in the Black & Proud series is another impressive entry , equal parts time capsule and monster funk collection . The disc further explores music's role as both a catalyst behind and product of the militant Black Power movement of the late 1960s.
Outside of the Staple Singers' "Respect Yourself," there's little here that earned significant radio exposure, but even if their messages didn't reach quite as far, efforts like Marlena Shaw's "I Wish I Knew (How It Would Feel to Be Free)," and Gil Scott-Heron's "Who'll Pay Reparations on My Soul?" resonate with comparable conviction and righteous anger, not to mention deep, ferocious grooves.

In a modern era where popular music is so often disposable and mindless, these 19 tracks recall an era when records were like reports from the frontlines , the times may have changed, but the passion and power haven't diminished.

Syl Johnson : I'm Talkin' Bout Freedom Lyrics

When you hear what I gotta say
I'm sure you won't be able to turn your head away
Because, what I'm gonna talk about
Nobody wants to be without...

And it makes no difference
Who you are
Or what color you happen to be
As long as you're alive and breathing
This is got to be
One of your neeeeeeds...

I'm talkin'bout Freedom!
Freedom for You and Me
And every living thing that breathe

When you see how free
The birds fly in the sky...
You gonna have to say
'My, oh my, oh my...'
And all the waters in the rivers so deep
Oh, how it flows so free...

And it makes no difference
Who you are
Or what color you happen to be
As long as you're alive and breathing
This is got to be
One of your neeeeeeds...

I'm talking about freedom (4x)
Oh, what wonderful world this would be
If everyone could be free
Freedom for You and Me
And every living thing that breathe

Staple Singers : Respect Yourself Lyrics

If you disrespect anybody that you run in to
How in the world do you think anybody's s'posed to respect you
If you don't give a heck 'bout the man with the bible in his hand, y'all
Just get out the way, and let the gentleman do his thing
You the kind of gentleman that want everything your way, yeah
Take the sheet off your face, boy, it's a brand new day

Respect yourself, respect yourself, respect yourself, respect yourself
If you don't respect yourself
Ain't nobody gonna give a good cahoot, na na na na
Respect yourself, respect yourself, respect yourself, respect yourself

If you're walking 'round think'n that the world owes you something 'cause you're here
You goin' out the world backwards like you did when you first come here yeah
Keep talkin' bout the president, won't stop air pollution
Put your hand on your mouth when you cough, that'll help the solution
Oh, you cuss around women and you don't even know their names, no
Then you're dumb enough to think that'll make you a big ol' man

Respect yourself, respect yourself, respect yourself, respect yourself
If you don't respect yourself
Ain't nobody gonna give a good cahoot, na na na na
Respect yourself, respect yourself, respect yourself, respect yourself

Marlena Shaw : I Wish I Knew (How It Would Feel To Be Free) Lyrics

Well I wish, I knew how It would feel to be free
Just to break all of the chains, that kinda keep binding me
And I wish that I could say, all that I'm longing to say
Say it loud, say it clear for the whole wide world to hear

And I wish that I could share all the love I got in my heart
Lord how sweet it would be If we never never had to part
And I wish that you could know what it's really like to be me
Then you would see and agree every man ought a be free

And I wish that I could sing like a bird up in the sky
Lord how sweet it would be child if I found that I could fly
I would soar up to the sky and I'd look down, look down at the sea, and then I would sing, 'cause I know what it's really like to be free

I wish, I knew how It would feel to be free
Just to break up all the chains, that just keep on binding me
And I wish that you could know, what it's like to be me
I know you would see how, and then agree
Each and every man ought a be free

Freedom, Freedom, Each and every man wants freedom
Free at last, free at last good god mighty I'm free at last
I wish you could know, I wish you could see
I wish you could know what it's like to be free

Moebius

Jean Henri Gaston Giraud (French:  8 May 1938 – 10 March 2012) was a French artist, cartoonist and writer who worked in the Franco-Belgian bandes dessinees tradition. Giraud garnered worldwide acclaim predominantly under the pseudonym M?bius and to a lesser extent Gir, which he used for the Blueberry series and his paintings. Esteemed by Federico Fellini, Stan Lee and Hayao Miyazaki among others, he has been described as the most influential bandes dessinees artist after Herge.

His most famous works include the series Blueberry, created with writer Jean-Michel Charlier, featuring one of the first anti-heroes in Western comics. As M?bius he created a wide range of science fiction and fantasy comics in a highly imaginative, surreal, almost abstract style.

These works include Arzach and the Airtight Garage of Jerry Cornelius. He also collaborated with avant-garde filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky for an unproduced adaptation of Dune and the comic book series The Incal.

M?bius also contributed storyboards and concept designs to numerous science fiction and fantasy films, such as Alien, Tron, The Fifth Element and The Abyss.

In 2004, Moebius and Jodorowsky sued Luc Besson for using The Incal as inspiration for Fifth Element, a lawsuit which they lost. Blueberry was adapted for the screen in 2004 by French director Jan Kounen.

V.A : Black And Proud : The Soul Of The Black Panther Era Vol. 1

The Black Power movement was a political movement to achieve a form of Black Power and the many philosophies it contains.

The movement saw various forms of activism some violent and some peaceful, all hoping to achieve black empowerment. The Black Power movement also represented socialist movements, all with the general motivation of improving the standing of black people in society.

Originated in the aftershock of the Civil Rights movement, some doubted the philosophy of the movement begging for more radical action, taking influences from Malcolm X.

The cornerstone of the movement was the Black Panther Party, a Black Power organization dedicated to socialism and the use of violence to achieve it. The Black Power movement developed in the criticisms of the Civil Rights movement in the early 1960s, and over time and into the 1970s, the movement grew and became more violent.

After years of violence, many left the movement and the police began arresting violent actors in the movement.
The Black Power movement also spilled out into the Caribbean creating the Black Power Revolution.

Motivated by principles of community control, Black Power activists founded scores of institutions and services, including black-owned bookstores, food cooperatives, farms, media, printing presses, schools, clinics, and ambulance services.

Sons of Slum : Right On Lyrics

Hey baby
That's alright people
I know that's alright
Oh, when we love each other
I know that's alright
Oh feel it, feel it
Oh everybody feel it
God know that's alright, yes
Some of us were born
With money to spend
Some of us were born
For races to win
Some of us are aware
That it's good for us to care
Some of us feel the icy wind
Of poverty blowing in the air
For those of us who simply like to socialize
For those of us who tend the sick
Ah, and heed the people's cries

Let me say to you
Right on
Right on, feel it
Yea, oh, oh, oh Lord, Lord, people
And I say, right on
Honey right on
For those of us who live
Where peace is craved
For those of us who live, uh-huh
Where hatred is enslaved, alright
For those of us who live a life
Yea, surrounded by good fortune and wealth
Talk about it
Those of us who live a life
Hey, hey, hey enjoying ourselves
For those of us who got drowned
In the sea of happiness
For the soul that takes pride in his God
And himself and everything else
Love
That's all it is
We need love
That's all it is
Oh, oh
Love, love
Love's the thing
Love, love, love, love
Sweet love, love
Wonderful love
Ah, true love, love
Love for your brother
Love, for God
Pure love
Love can conquer hate every time

Give out some love and you'll find
Peace sublime
And my darling, one more thing
If you let me, I will take you
To live where love is King
Ah, ah baby, baby
Ah, ah, ah, baby
People, people
People who love and care
That's alright
Alright

MARVIN GAYE LYRICS

"You're The Man"

Talkin', talkin' to the people
Tryin' to get them to go your way
Tellin' lies, not to worry
That we won't be led astray
So blind, unsignified
Your opponents always lying
Think about the mistakes you make
I believe America's at stake
You know, busin', busin' is the issue
If you have a plan wager
If you have a plan
If you've got a master plan
Got to vote for you
Hey hey, got to vote for you
You're the man

We don't wanna hear no more lies
About how you planned a compromise
We want our dollar value increased
Employment to rise
The nation's taxation
Is causin' all, all this inflation
Don't give us no V sign
Turn around and rob the people blind
Economics is the issue
Do you have a plan wager?
'Cause if you've got a master plan
Got to vote for you
You're the man

[8 times, over scat singing:]
Don't you understand?
There's misery in the land
[One version fades out during this; read further for a longer version]

People marching on Washington
Better hear what they have to say
'Cause the tables just might turn against you, brother
Set around Election Day
Politics and hypocrites
Is turning us all into lunatics
Can you take the guns from our sons?
Right all the wrongs this administration has done?
Peace and freedom is the issue
Do you have a plan wager?
If you've got a plan
If you've got a master plan
Got to vote for you
Hey hey, got to vote for you
'Cause you're the man

[Repeat and fade:]
Got to vote for you

The Sound : From The Lions Mouth 1981

From the Lions Mouth  is the second studio album by English post-punk band The Sound, released in November 1981 on record label Korova. Following the release of their previous album Jeopardy, keyboardist Belinda "Bi" Marshall left the group and was replaced by Colvin "Max" Mayers. For their new album, The Sound worked with producer Hugh Jones, as well as co-producing the album themselves. The album's sound was more polished than previous efforts.

This album shows Adrian Borland, the singer/guitarist and primary songwriter, as a troubled man with hope.
The result is an album that, while dark, is also subtly uplifting. He explores the darker side of humanity while simultaneously enciting us to use our arms and our brains to find our own sense of purpose, and warns us of the new dark age impending if we don't. This album is lyrically and musically ahead of its time, and easily one of the best albums of the post-punk era. Get this lost classic while you still can.

NME compared the album's bleak nature to Joy Division's Closer. Sounds qualified the album as "gothic". Despite The Sound being posited as a gloomy band, AllMusic wrote, "snake-charming opener 'Winning' is From the Lions Mouth was well received by critics upon its release. Mike Nicholls of Record Mirror wrote,

Adrian Kelvin Borland (6 December 1957 – 26 April 1999) was an English singer, songwriter, guitarist and record producer, best known as the lead singer of post-punk band The Sound (1979–87). Following a substantial solo career spanning five albums, he succumbed to the symptoms of schizoaffective disorder and committed suicide in April 1999.

Although it is unclear as to when Borland was diagnosed with his condition, from 1985 onward the symptoms of his depression became more and more apparent. His problems would manifest themselves in many of the songs on The Sound's final album, Thunder Up, as well as in the schizophrenic layout of the piece ; while the initial tracks deal with confronting issues (for example "Acceleration Group", "Barria Alta"), the second half proceeds at an entirely different tangent, becoming either tortuous ("Shot Up And Shut Down"), frenetic ("I Give You Pain") or mournful ("You've Got A Way"). The touring for Thunder Up culminated in disaster for the band when Borland left halfway through a set at Zoetermeer, Netherlands. It would be the last Sound gig

"The Sound seem set to take up where Joy Division left off and become the saviors of the adolescent grim brigade". Melody Maker's Steve Sutherland commented on the album's lighter, more commercial tone than that of Jeopardy, calling it "Jeopardy-as-palatable-product".
Like a dash of cold water in the faces of all the bands that were wallowing and withering away at the weeping well  The Sound were not mopes. They had their problems with life, but rather than just vent or escape from them, they confront them and ask questions and attempt to sort it all out.

The night of the 25th 1999 Borland slipped away to Wimbledon Station . In the early hours of the 26th horrified commuters watched as Borland committed suicide by throwing himself under a train . He was 41 years of age , and was interred at Morden Cemetery , London .

Adrian Borland – vocals, guitar, production
Michael Dudley – drums, percussion, production
Graham Green – bass guitar, production
    Max Mayers – keyboards, production

WINNING  LYRICS

What holds your hope together,
Make sure it's strong enough
When you reach the end of your tether
It's because it wasn't strong enough,
I was going to drown,
Then I started swimming
I was going down,
Then I started winning
Winning - winning

When you're on the bottom
Crawl back to the top
Something pulls you up,
and a voice you can't stop,
I was going to drown,
Then I started swimming,
I was going down
Then I started winning
Winning - winning.
NEW DARK AGE LYRICS

In the darkest times
Darkest fears are heard
And from the safest places
Come the bravest words
Some make a quiet life
To keep this
Scared old world at bay
The dogs are howling on the street outside
So they close the curtains, hope they go away
And it's pressure from all sides
Coming down around our ears
Stuck in this room without a door
Scratched away at the walls for years
All we've got to show is the dust on the floor
And here it comes, a new dark age

I catch your eyes
Before they fall to the ground
We're running out of time, breath and steam
We're running down
They're burning witches
Up on punishment hill
Dying proof in the power of autority
To exact it's will
And we've broken our fingers
Broken our faith
Broken our hearts so many times
They can't be broken anymore
Scratched away at the walls for years
All we've got to show is the dust on the floor
And here it comes, a new dark age
Here it comes.... A New dark age
